Two Ways to Bring Your Domain to Shopify

When moving your domain to Shopify, you have two main options—connecting it while keeping it registered with your current provider or transferring it entirely to Shopify. Choose the method that best suits your needs.

Option 1: Connecting Your Domain to Shopify (Recommended)

For those who want to retain control of their domain with their current provider while using it for a Shopify store, follow these steps:

  • Log in to your domain provider (e.g., GoDaddy, Namecheap, Google Domains).
  • Locate the DNS Settings or Domain Management section.
  • Update the following records:
    • A Record: Point it to Shopify’s IP address: 23.227.38.65
    • CNAME (www): Set it to shops.myshopify.com
  • Save the changes.
  • Log in to your Shopify admin panel.
  • Navigate to Settings > Domains and click Connect existing domain.
  • Enter your domain and follow the prompts to verify the connection.

Note: DNS changes may take up to 48 hours to fully propagate, although they often update much sooner.

Option 2: Transferring Your Domain to Shopify

If you'd prefer Shopify to handle all aspects of domain management, consider transferring your domain directly. Here’s how:

  • Unlock your domain in your current registrar’s settings.
  • Request the transfer authorization code from your domain provider.
  • In Shopify, go to Settings > Domains and click Transfer domain.
  • Enter your domain name and follow the on-screen instructions.
  • Approve the transfer request via the confirmation email sent by your current provider.

Transfers can take up to 7 days to complete. Once the process is finished, Shopify will automatically renew your domain each year.

Which Option Should You Choose?

If you prefer flexibility and are comfortable managing your domain settings, connecting your domain is the faster and simpler choice. However, if you'd rather not deal with technical management, transferring the domain ensures that Shopify oversees everything for you.
