Automatic Redirection Now Available for Markets Using Primary Domains

Shopify Updates:

Enhance Localization with Automatic Redirection

Shopify has expanded its automatic redirection feature, making it easier to localize your online store when using a "primary domain only" strategy or a shared custom domain across multiple markets.

How Automatic Redirection Works

When the "Automatic redirection" setting is enabled in Settings > Markets > Preferences, your pages will dynamically adapt to show region-specific content based on your customers’ GeoIP. This ensures a localized shopping experience for your visitors.

Example Use Case

Suppose your primary store domain is example.com, targeting the United States as the primary market. If you set up an additional market for Canada using the "primary domain only" strategy with CAD currency enabled:

  • Visitors from the United States will see USD pricing and content specific to the U.S. market on example.com.
  • Canadian visitors will automatically see CAD pricing and Canadian market-specific content on the same domain.

Important Considerations

  • When automatic redirection is activated for "primary domain only" or shared custom domain strategies, content for non-primary markets isn’t indexed by search engines.
  • To comply with local legislation, customers from the European Union (EU) will not be automatically redirected within the EU.

Rollout Details

This feature is already available for new Shopify merchants and will be rolled out to existing merchants starting September 6. Make sure to enable automatic redirection to leverage this powerful localization feature.
