Bulgaria Adopts Euro (EUR) as Official Currency

Shopify Updates:

Bulgaria Transitions to the Euro

Effective January 1, 2026, Bulgaria has officially replaced its national currency, the Bulgarian Lev (BGN), with the Euro (EUR) for all electronic transactions. This change aligns Bulgaria with other European Union nations utilizing the Euro as their primary currency.

Impact on Shopify Stores

For Shopify merchants, this transition means updates to supported currencies:

  • Markets that previously used the Bulgarian Lev are now updated to Euros for stores using Shopify’s multi-currency feature.
  • Customers who previously paid in BGN will now see their transactions completed in EUR.

Recommendations for Store Owners

Shopify strongly advises store owners who do not currently use multi-currency and have the Bulgarian Lev (BGN) set as their default currency to promptly update their settings to Euros (EUR). This ensures accurate financial transactions and an optimal customer experience.
