Understanding Credit Notes on Shopify

Shopify Updates:

What Are Credit Notes?

Credit Notes are official documents issued by Shopify to record adjustments made to a previous invoice. They are typically created when there are cancellations or changes to charges on your Shopify bill.

Key Changes Effective July 17

Starting July 17, any adjustments to a Shopify invoice, whether it's a total or partial cancellation of charges, will automatically generate a Credit Note. This ensures transparency and provides you with a detailed record of every billing adjustment.

How to Access Credit Notes

  • Navigate to the Billing section in your Shopify admin dashboard.
  • Locate the specific invoice with adjustments.
  • Download or view the associated Credit Note directly from the admin panel for your records.

Refund Methods Associated with Credit Notes

Each Credit Note comes with an associated refund mechanism. The available refund options are:

  • Refund to the original payment method: This means the refunded amount will return directly to the payment method you initially used for the transaction.
  • Shopify Account Credits: These are post-bill credits provided by Shopify, which can be applied to future invoice charges. Note that they cannot be refunded to other payment methods.

Why Credit Notes Matter

Credit Notes help you keep track of billing adjustments in a transparent and efficient way. This not only simplifies bookkeeping but also aligns with financial best practices, ensuring that all adjustments are well-documented and easily accessible.
