Automatic Replacement for Deprecated Shopify Fonts: A Guide

Automatic Replacement for Deprecated Shopify Fonts: A Guide

Shopify Updates:

Shopify is enhancing its font library by transitioning to open-source fonts. To help merchants maintain the look of their stores, we’re introducing automatic replacement for deprecated fonts across themes, checkout, and the Shopify Forms app.

What Is Changing?

All deprecated fonts in online store themes will be replaced with fonts of a similar style to preserve the visual identity of your store. This process will take place gradually throughout August 2025.

Who Needs to Take Action?

If you’re a merchant, no action is needed—your store will automatically update. However, if you’re a developer creating themes for the Shopify Theme Store, ensure your theme presets are up to date. The deadline to update presets was January 3, 2025, but there’s still time to make changes if needed.

How to Prepare

  • Review Shopify's deprecated fonts list to identify impacted fonts.
  • Update your themes with Shopify’s recommended font replacements or your preferred alternatives.
  • Ensure your store’s branding remains consistent by testing the new fonts post-replacement.

Why the Switch to Open-Source Fonts?

Shopify’s move to open-source fonts aligns with our commitment to making e-commerce more accessible and cost-effective. Open-source fonts provide high-quality alternatives while reducing licensing concerns for merchants and developers.

Next Steps

  • Merchants can relax knowing Shopify handles the changes automatically.
  • Developers should prioritize updating any preset themes that still rely on deprecated fonts.
  • Keep an eye out for updates and announcements regarding the automatic replacement timeline.
