Automatically Redirect Visitors to Translated Storefronts Based on Browser Language

Shopify Updates:

Enhance the customer experience by automatically directing your visitors to the appropriate translated storefront using the Language Redirection feature in Shopify Markets. This seamless functionality detects a visitor’s browser language and switches the storefront to match, improving accessibility and localization.

What Is Language Redirection?

Language Redirection allows your store to automatically redirect visitors to a translated version of your website based on their browser’s primary language. This ensures that customers can shop in their preferred language if it’s supported by your store.

How It Works

  • Shopify detects a visitor’s browser language setting.
  • If a corresponding language version of your storefront is available, the visitor is redirected to the localized version.

Steps to Enable Language Redirection

  1. Add the desired languages to your Shopify store.
  2. Assign these languages to the relevant markets within Shopify Markets.
  3. Translate your content into the added languages.
  4. Publish the languages in your Shopify admin.
  5. Enable the Language Redirection setting in Shopify Markets.

For example, if your domain is johns-apparel.ca and your Canada market’s default language is English, a visitor from Canada with their browser's primary language set to French will be redirected to johns-apparel.ca/fr, where they can browse your site in French.

Benefits of Language Redirection

  • Improved customer experience tailored to linguistic preferences.
  • Increased accessibility for international customers.
  • Enhanced engagement by serving content in the visitor's native language.
