Tax ID Now Required at Checkout for Shipments to Mexico

Shopify Updates:

New Tax Regulation for Shipments to Mexico

Starting January 1, 2025, the Mexican government will require tax identification numbers (RFC) for all orders under $2,500 USD being shipped into Mexico. This is part of a new compliance initiative to enhance tax collection and streamline international shipping requirements.

What Does This Mean for Your Store?

To help merchants comply with the new regulations, Shopify has added an 'RFC' field to the checkout process. This field is designed to capture key tax identification details provided by customers.

Where Can You Find the New RFC Field?

The RFC field is now available in the following areas of your Shopify store:

  • Checkout: During the checkout process, customers will be prompted to provide their RFC, CURP, or foreign tax identification number.
  • Orders and Draft Orders in Admin: The information can also be accessed and managed directly in your Shopify admin panel.

Important Note About Existing Customizations

If you have previously implemented customizations in your checkout process to collect tax IDs for shipments to Mexico, be sure to disable them. Failure to do so may result in duplicate fields being displayed, which could confuse customers at checkout.
